It serves as a vehicle for them to explain the complex range of feelings they experience while she transitions and to represent herself along with other transgender persons in this hostile world. Because Bernie’s work is a constant reflection of who she is, there is a lot of transparency between her and her audience.

Bernie’s current fascination is curating books of collage about the transfeminine experience, they allow her to delve into many aspects in a more tangible, immersive and narrative driven way. An ongoing source of inspiration is the photographer Laurence Philomene. Their use of bright popping colour and expression of their queerness through their photo series puberty really strikes a core queerness I want to embody in her work.
