Caitlin Dunn

CAITLIN LOGO.png

Caitlin Dunn is an artist specialising in drawing. She finds this hands-on approach effective within her practice, allowing her to create artwork on the go following themes of journey. Her work aims to romanticise the notion of travelling on public transport, capturing the mundane aspects of “the everyday commute”.

She uses water-soluble inks and fineliners, the separating dyes create a sense of depth and whimsy for each simple sketch. The philosophy of journey, and the cyclical nature of travel play a large role within her work. She recently has been delving deeper into her memories, and nostalgia, bringing forth artwork that uses her late father’s photography. The end result culminates into an unexpected collaboration of skill, and a token of remembrance. She wants the viewer to see how she portrays journeys, and the significance of the mundane. She hopes they will start to romanticise some of their own everyday journeys.

“Scroll” is a combination of kitchen roll and ink. The scroll acts as a vessel to showcase the journeys she has taken. This alongside with the ink's whimsical colour palette, help capture the mundane aspects of “the everyday commute”. The tissue is fragile and well-loved, with a lot of rips and tears. The more it was worked on, the more precious it became, despite its simple content.

'A Shared Journey' has been done using resources from her journeys and her late father's photography. Recently, she's noticed the likeness in her work and her fathers, bringing forth inspiration for this unexpected collaboration. To date, this the hardest work she's made, as it delves into themes of grief and sadness. Through these feelings, a body of hopeful work is created, as she continues pushing the themes used within her practice.

This sketchbook was an experimental, mixed-media piece using various content from the artist's journeys. A lot of different mediums were used, culminating in this colourful collection of images. She wants the audience to romanticise their everyday journeys, and see them as something special and exciting, rather than just a chore. These vibrant drawings are of many mundane features. Chipped pillars, invasive weeds, and decrepit stations just to name a few.
